Ikebana International Hana Chapter of Belgium presents an ikebana demonstration on the occasion of the Ghent Flower Show on Tuesday 5 May in the Provincial Government Building.

This ikebana demonstration offers a unique opportunity to discover the world of Japanese flower arranging.

This Japanese art of flower arranging originated in Buddhism, which was imported from China in the 6th century.

Throughout the evolution of Ikebana, different movements or “schools” have emerged, each with its own style, aesthetic approach and emphasis, developed over time.

During this demonstration, arrangements from three different ikebana schools will be shown. Each school has its own style, rules and philosophy, ranging from classical and formal to free and modern.

Ikenobo is the first ikebana school. This school is classical, but also develops modern forms and styles.

The Ohara school is known for its landscape-like, natural style, the use of bowls of water and a strong connection with the seasons.

The Sogetsu school is expressive, groundbreaking and contemporary, with room for personal interpretation and creativity.

This demonstration invites you to look at flowers, branches and space with different eyes. It is intended for both enthusiasts and those who want to discover ikebana for the first time.
