Provinciehuis Oost-Vlaanderen

At the Ghent Provincial Government Building, you’ll discover why East Flanders is known as the province of floriculture.

Almost 10,000 flower bulbs bring colour to spring on the Provincieplein.

With a walking map in hand, you can learn more about heritage trees, experience the charm of the Ghent Azalea, admire the Japanese art of Ikebana flower arranging, and take a look at the mini-gardens in the planters of the Jong Tuin Labo.

Head to the provincial hall to look for the artwork ‘Girl with Flowers’ by Gustave De Smet. Along the way, be surprised by a floating floral arrangement by De Groene Verbeelding.

The icing on the cake is Paradeplein, home to the largest roof garden in the province of East Flanders. Here, Buro Landschap has transformed the former barracks site into a public neighbourhood park. This is an urban oasis situated atop an underground car park and workspaces. Not a single drop of water is wasted in this climate garden. Here, particular attention is paid to plant species that attract insects and birds.

Are you visiting the ‘East Flanders in Bloom’ exhibition at the East Flanders Provincial Government Building? Then you can pop into Resto Leo before or after your visit. Resto Leo’s menu features local produce from East Flanders. Resto Leo is the new provincial restaurant in the Provincial House (on the old site, Leopold Barracks) and consists of a bistro and a self-service restaurant.
